I Was on the Market for a New Printer

Just as the title of the post says, I was on the market for a new printer.  My old printer ran out of ink, and after pricing things out, I realized it would be worth it to upgrade to a newer printer since the cost to replace the ink was so high.

Although I paid more for the new printer than I would have paid for only new ink cartridges, I was happy with that decision because I think I got my money’s worth!

I had always heard good things about Epson, HP and Canon printers so that’s what I was looking for at my local Staples.  Turns out, the sales person convinced me to buy a Brother printer/scanner/photo copier/fax machine.  I honestly only needed a printer so I really hesitated when he suggested the Brother printer.  But since I had told him my printing needs (coupons pretty much!) he told me not to bother with the “photo” quality printers.

Here are some of the features that I love about my Brother MFC-J415W Wireless Colour Inkjet All-in-One Printer:

  • Wireless (it was actually really easy to set up!)
  • 4-cartridge ink system (means I only change the colour that needs to be replaced)
  • Energy Star certified
  • Since it’s wireless, I don’t have to turn it on every time I want to print something.  It automatically turns on once I hit the print button on my computer.
  • The cost to replace each cartridge is quite reasonable at about $11.  I’m sure I can get them even cheaper if I bought them online.

I was also looking for a printer that was less than $100.  This one was on sale for $69.99 regular $109.99.  I was quite pleased with that price!

What kind of printer do you use?  Any helpful advice for those looking to buy a new one?

  1. I have a Brother as well. It’s lasted forever (8 yrs?) and still works like the day I got it. I’ve had other brands, but none of them compare!

  2. I hit your link to the Staples website and the printer shows as being full price. Do you know if it’s no longer on sale or if perhaps the sale is only in stores and not online?

I’m honestly not sure if the sale is still happening. But if it is, I’m sure it’s only in stores. I bought my printer a few weeks ago now. Sorry I can’t be much more help!

  3. I have an HP Photosmart All in One…its great, but the ink is too expensive…I just get it refilled at our corner store now:)
I am glad you went with a Brother…they are built to last. I used to work at a head office of 23 retail outlets and we used Brother printers and fax machines and they always held up to the messy standards of an ice cream parlour:) Some lasted 10+ years!

  4. Thanks for posting this… we’ve been looking for a printer that’s wireless (right now I have to e-mail the links to myself, then use our desktop to get them off of e-mail then print them and sometimes they’re expired by then :( )
I’ve forwarded the post to my hubby…

  5. I just bought the same all in one. You got a better deal than I did though, mine was $89.99 at Future Shop. I love it too, easy to set up and great having wireless.

  6. I have a brother that I got — probably 8 years ago. It’s actually a 6-in-one and I really like it. The only thing about the “only change the ink colour that ran out” is that it won’t print (mine won’t anyway) if only 1 colour is empty. So, I can’t run out of Cyan ink and print in all black. Also, like all inks, it’s expensive to buy refills. I used an on-line source and saved hundreds of dollars. Good luck!!
