I wanted to share this Puffed Wheat Squares recipe with you because it was a childhood favourite of mine! My Mom used to make it for my brother and I fairly often. While it’s next exactly a “healthy” treat, it is a delicious one!
They are similar to Rice Krispy squares in their preparation, but the gooey coating that holds them all together is chocolate flavoured, and the cereal is puffed wheat rather than rice crisps.
I’ve also been doing a bit of reading about Puffed Wheat Squares, and it appears as though they are quite well known in Canada, but are relatively unknown in other parts of the world. Huh!
Anyways, I hope you enjoy these Puffed Wheat Squares as much as I do!
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup syrup maple syrup, corn syrup, I used brown rice syrup
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 Tbsp cocoa
- 8 cups puffed wheat
-
Put 8 cups of puffed wheat into a 9x13 greased pan. Set aside.
-
Place butter, syrup, brown sugar and cocoa in a saucepan and heat over medium heat until bubbling.
-
Let bubble for 2 minutes and remove from heat.
-
Immediately pour over the puffed wheat. Stir well until all is coated well.
-
Set aside to cool.
-
Once cool, slice into serving sized pieces.
I’ve tried this recipe twice and can’t get them to stick together. I just get candied cereal. HELP! I’ve tried just boiling for 2 minutes. Then I tried 3 minutes…. I must be missing something. (I used maple syrup).
Okay people. 😂. Because I’m lazy, I stirred the chocolate carefully right into the 9×13 pan and it worked just fine. And it was super delicious. Yum!!
We are able to buy them at Food Basics. (Lindsay, On) They aren’t always along with the regular boxed cereals.
I have eaten these squares all my life but cannot find puffed wheat anywhere…even checked Amazon and Costco websites. Can anyone help…I’m from Northern Ontario.
Hi Judy, I found a President’s Choice brand of Puffed Wheat on the Superstore website. Do you have a store affiliated with the Loblaw stores near you?
Judy, I found them in a bag out here in BC at superstore. Hadn’t seen them in forever till then
Where do you find puffed wheat these days? I have been looking for it and all i can find is puffed Kamut……
Kamut is actually what I used and it worked perfectly! I had them on hand so I don’t have any suggestions as to where you can find plain puffed wheat. Sorry!
I just read this recipie and I think that the puffed wheat should be put into a bowl, pour the liquid over and mix thoroughly and then press into the 9 x 13″ pan. otherwise you may have puffed wheat all over the place and not all the pieces will be covered. I have made this many times and it is delicious.
good tip, it is much easier to ‘mix and coat’ in a large bowl and then transfer to baking dish!
